About The ISEE
The Independent School Entrance Examination (ISEE), developed by the Educational Records Bureau, is an entrance exam used by many private and independent schools in the United States. The ISEE has four levels of examinations: the Primary Level, for entrance to grades 2-4, the Lower level, for entrance to grades 5–6; Middle level, for entrance to grades 7–8; Upper level, for entrance to grades 9–12. All three levels (aside from the primary level) consist of five sections: Quantitative Reasoning, Verbal Reasoning, Reading Comprehension, Mathematics Achievement, and a 30-minute essay section. The ISEE costs around $100+, depending on registration method & testing location. You can only take the ISEE up to a maximum of 3 times in a 12-month admission cycle. What is a good ISEE score? The scoring process for the ISEE is a bit difficult to understand. In a nutshell, your score report will include a percentile rank for each section that compares you to a group of all students who took the exam over the last three years. These percentiles are also converted into "stanines" which range from 1-9. (9 is the highest and would be equivalent to scoring a 96%-99% on the exam). These stanine scores help admission officers easily compare you to other students. See percentile rank / stanine conversion table. Scores for the majority of students who are accepted to private school range in about the 60th percentile and above (stanine of 6 and up), while more competitive schools favor scores in the 80th percentile or higher (stanine of 7 and up). Scores needed for admission will vary by school. Score reports are available to view online approximately one week after your exam date. Your essay will not be scored, but a copy of it will be sent to the admissions officers at each of the schools you are applying to for their review.

Upcoming ISEE Test Dates & Registration
Students are allowed to take the ISEE once per testing season (so up to three times per year). The ISEE testing seasons are defined as Fall (August–November), Winter (December–March), and Spring (April–July). ISEE does not encourage multiple testing, but the option is available. Unlike the SAT and ACT, there are no national designated dates for the ISEE. Testing dates vary by state, grade level and school location in which you'd be taking the exam.
