What is a good GRE score?
It depends on what graduate school you want to attend. GRE scores as typically stated as separate sections, rather than a total combined score. The Quantitative Reasoning score ranges from 130 - 170, in 1-point increments. The Verbal Reasoning score also ranges from 130 - 170, in 1-point increments. Finally, the Analytical Writing score will range from 0 - 6, in half-point increments. National average scores for each section are as follows: QR-152; VR-152; AW-3.5. The average GRE score at MIT this year is Q-162, V-157. At USC, it is Q-163, V-158. Carnegie Mellon: Q-161, V-159. Princeton: Q-163, V-158. Based on our research:
Top Score: QR-164 and above. VR-164 and above. AW-5.0 and above
Good Score: QR-160 and above. VR-160 and above. AW-4.5 and above
Your official GRE scores will be available in your ETS online account, and sent to your chosen score recipients approximately 10–15 days after your test date. While your GRE score is a very important part of graduate school admissions decisions, it is not the only part.
