About The HSPT
The High School Placement Test, HSPT, is a comprehensive placement test for placement in grades 9-12 at a private Catholic high school. Each school uses your HSPT result to assist with admissions, scholarship selection & curriculum placement. Criteria determined by one school to assist with academic decisions may not be the same for another school. The cost of the test can range from $20 to $40, depending on the school.
The HSPT is composed of 5 multiple choice sections and runs approximately 2 hours and 30 minutes with breaks.

- Math: tests math knowledge in a more straightforward manner
- Language: tests grammar, spelling, and composition
Schools can also require optional sections that the HSPT offers: Mechanical Aptitude, Science, and Catholic Religion. Results from optional sections are reported separately and not included on the basic HSPT score report. Students should closely review testing requirements at each school in which they plan to apply to. It is strongly recommended that you only take the HSPT once.

What is a good HSPT Score? The score on each of the five sections of the HSPT exam range from 200 to 800. The total score is an average of the five sections, and also ranges from 200-800. 500 is considered the average score, and a score above 600 would be considered above average (above 80th percentile). Check with each school to see what their desired score range is. As stated above, it is strongly recommended that you only take the HSPT once. If you take it more than once, your lower score may be used. You will have to check with each school or diocese to find out when they will have your results ready. It varies by school/diocese. |
